The partners in such a process increasingly rely on database solutions for the requirements. Today`s document exchange relays a variety of formats and information between these databases can be exchanged using a variety of formats, such as e-mails, word processing documents or spreadsheets, and in different ways – e.g. by fax or in personal meetings.

Where database solutions face incompatibility or technical obstacles such as license or bandwidth restrictions, problems in the information flow are the result, requiring expensive inhouse custom solutions.

This interrupts the continuous process and frequently requires manual intervention – a potential source of error. As a basis for the synchronous editing of requirements in a continuous process, the German car manufacturers' software initiative (Hersteller Initiative Software – HIS) has specified and published the open interchange format RIF (Requirements Interchange Format).

EXTESSY AG has been the first to develop a universal RIF-based communication platform for requirements databases: EXERPT.
EXERPT provides a solution for the problem of exchanging requirements. This now leaves the issue of editing requirements, where the EXERPT.Editor comes in.

Solution

EXERPT.Editor allows users to create and comment requirements "on-the-go", enabling offline collaboration between distributed teams.

Changes can be recorded during development and testing and can be documented consistently – even in situations where it previously was impossible to introduce a requirements management tool, e.g. during a test drive in a car.

All stakeholders can ensure that their documents always meet the latest requirements.

Result

The EXERPT.Editor accelerates editing and communication of requirements throughout the development cycle. The immediate benefit of this time saving approach is a faster time to market.

The continuous availability of a process safe requirements editor that can be consistently and reliably deployed in any IT environment results in improved quality of your documents, and ultimately development results.

EXERPT.Editor enables a progressive entry to requirements engineering. Structured gathering and elicitation of requirements can be started immediately prior to the deployment of a requirements database solution. The RIF compliance of the EXERPT.Editor enables the lossless restitution of the created documents in the database.

Features

RIF-based editor
EXERPT.Editor is a standalone application for the visualisation and processing of requirements and test data using the Requirements Interchange Format (RIF). RIF enables a process safe manner for automated synchronization with existing database solutions for requirements management.

Based on the award winning EXERPT technology, EXERPT.Editor can be used with any requirements or test management solution deployed and even without a connection to an existing database.

Simple deployment, no database connection required
EXERPT.Editor is the most easily deployable requirements editor available worldwide, as it does not require a database.

EXERPT.Editor enables full requirements editing capability on par with state-of-the-art requirements management solutions. Combined with the EXERPT solution full data integrity can be guaranteed.

User-friendly and flexible visual presentation
When it loads a RIF file, EXERPT.Editor automatically identifies the requirements management tool used to create the documents. The display of requirements and test data can quickly and easily be changed to a required or more familiar view (document-centric/form-centric view).

Managing access policies and views
EXERPT.Editor enforces the access policies specified in the RIF documents. These normally reflect the access policies defined per role in the requirements database. Thus, standard workflows like elicitation or commenting can be seamlessly executed across requirements management tools and the EXERPT.Editor.

Increased ROI
EXERPT.Editor is built using standard Eclipse™ model based technology. The open platform Eclipse™ enables the easy access to a large set of third party software that can be readily integrated.

EXERPT.Editor largely increases the ROI of established requirements engineering processes by extending the reach of the established infrastructure far beyond today’s users.

EXERPT.Editor allows integrating and synchronizing requirements with test specifications coming from different departments, external reviewers and certifying bodies and/or companies not using requirements management tools.

Rich content, text formats, OLEs
EXERPT.Editor supports standard text formats, as well as lists, tables, hyperlinks and multimedia data (images, OLEs (Object Linking and Embedding), etc.).

Seamless Copy & Paste
EXERPT.Editor allows simple copy & paste of rich content, such as images and data, from standard Office spreadsheets or word processing applications to a RIF document.

Multi-level undo/redo
At any time the Undo/Redo feature can reverse or restore changes within a single requirement or even an entire document.

Templates
EXERPT.Editor can create documents based on user defined templates.

Navigation bar
EXERPT.Editor permits both hierarchical navigation in the document’s object tree as well as stepping through the document object by object, using the navigation bar.
