It is generally not possible to exchange documents and functional specifications between different software tools without any loss of data. As a consequence, the Hersteller Initiative Software (HIS) developed the Requirement Interchange Format (RIF). Integrated in EXERPT, this neutral format provides a framework that allows seamless exchange and synchronization of files in requirements management.

EXERPT stands for EXTESSY Engineering Requirements PlaTform. EXTESSY developed this tool for seamless export, import and synchronization of data between requirements management tools. The requirements were developed by and with the leading German automobile manufacturers.

EXERPT also offers additional plug-ins to connect to test management tools extending its realm of application beyond requirements management. This eliminates further barriers in the development process – between tools and people. Collaboration of all parties involved in the development process is improved and information is synchronized.

In addition, the EXERPT.Editor provides a way to edit data independently of the originating software. Here as well, there are no longer any limits to the flexibility in the development process. Costs and time are saved and risks are reduced considerably. With application of the RIF, formerly separate work processes are networked by the advanced technologies of EXERPT.

EXERPT Development Partners:

“EXERPT has the potential to put an end to the “non value-adding” tool discussion.”
Gerhard Wagner / Audi AG, Manager of Network Integration and Testing

“The goal of RIF is to break the boundaries between the different RE tools available on the market and to provide an XML-based, open, and generic exchange format for
requirements.”

EXERPT stands for seamless data import, export and synchronization

EXERPT provides a way to exchange data in the field of requirements and test management. EXERPT document is conform to the Requirements Interchange Format (RIF) which is now endorsed by the automotive industry as the reference for requirements exchange.

Task Focus
During the development process, documents are exchanged between the individual parties. It should be irrelevant whether documents deal with requirements to be supplied externally to different subcontractors, or internally to different business units. More importance should be placed on content rather than the formats. EXERPT facilitates focus on content through its use of a neutral format, and empoyers users to freely and seamlessly exchange information.

EXERPT allows you to:

  • extract requirements from existing software
  • transfer requirements from one RM-Tool to another
  • transfer of requirements to a test management tool
  • network different stages in the development process (e.g. RE/RM, Test)
  • synchronize distributed requirements or test management documents
  • extract and reconstruct references between the individual documents
  • consolidate information through various tool plug-ins
  • edit created documents (database-independent)
  • return results back to original RM-Tool through unique identification
  • conduct reviews over e-mail
  • long term archival of documents for easy search and retrieval
  • streamline document feedback and reviews
  • enhance and extend document collaboration
RIF Format
The integration of the requirements management tools is based on an XML format defined by the Hersteller Initiative Software (HIS). The resulting RIF provides the following basis for EXERPT to:

  • declare standardized requirement objects
  • grouping and structuring possibilities for requirement objects
  • define relationships between the individual requirement groups and objects
  • extend the individual objects to make unique identification possible
With the help of a standardized foundation, EXERPT creates synchronization between a variety of areas within a development process.

Tool-Plug-in
Requirements and test management tools are integrated in EXERPT via tool plug-ins.

Tool plug-ins serve as a link between:

  • the proprietary data from the requirements or test management tool, and
  • the EXERPT RIF conforms XML components
Tool plug-ins provide the following features:

  • access projects, data sources, and objects from original tool
  • import, export and synchronize of data to other tool plug-ins
  • wizard-based interaction with the user
Tool plug-ins are augmented through EXERPT:

  • view and edit proprietary data from a single user interface (Viewer/Editor)
  • create standard reports independent of development activities (Reporter)
  • synchronize different development activities
  • exchange requirements and test specifications
  • extend: new plug-ins can be developed
